Charis Liu
Lawyer
Charis is a criminal defence lawyer with litigation experience in both defence and prosecution.
She first joined Platform Litigation in 2022, where she assisted with murder and drug trafficking cases as a summer articling student.
Before returning to Platform, Charis was Crown Counsel with the BC Prosecution Service and routinely attended both Provincial and Supreme Court in British Columbia. She led cases involving a wide range of criminal charges such as sexual assault, aggravated assault, unauthorized possession of a prohibited firearm, impaired driving, theft and mischief. As Crown Counsel, Charis gained unique insight into how the prosecution approaches cases from initial charge assessment through to sentencing, in turn making her a better advocate for her clients.
During law school, she volunteered with the Law Students' Legal Advice Program, guiding fellow students in providing free legal services to the public. She gained practical experience while working alongside esteemed criminal defence lawyer Jonathan Desbarats at UBC’s Criminal Law Clinic. Charis also worked with the UBC Innocence Project, where she assisted in investigating wrongful convictions and advocated for those cases to be overturned.
